Microwave-Assisted Freeze-Drying with Frequency-Based Control Concepts via Solid-State Generators: A Simulative and Experimental Study

Freeze-drying is a common process to extend the shelf life of food and bioactive substances. Its main drawback long drying time associated high production costs. Microwaves can be applied significantly shorten process. This study investigates effects modulating electromagnetic field in microwave-assisted freeze-drying (MFD). Control concepts based on microwave frequency are evaluated using simulations. The then first part primary laboratory-scale system with solid-state generators. Targeted modulation simulations enabled an increase energy efficiency or heating homogeneity throughout MFD while having negligible power dissipation ratio between frozen dried product areas. predicted qualitative observed experimental proof concept regarding homogeneity. Additionally, shortened times were experiments targeted application energy-efficient frequencies. However, differences occurred quantitative validation models for dependence frequency. Nevertheless, used time-efficient investigation control concepts. In summary, frequency-based represents promising approach intensification.
